Getting Married at the District Court

Please call 717-762-9411 if you have any questions about the requirements to get married in this courthouse.

This District Court DOES NOT provide a marriage license. In Franklin County, the Clerk of Courts provides the marriage license.

Witness not Needed

You DO NOT need to bring a witness to the ceremony. The Applicants may bring up to 18 guests with them to be present for the wedding ceremony.

All Weddings MUST be Scheduled In-Person

The Applicants must come to the District Court to schedule a wedding.

Please bring the following:

- $57 filing fee in the form of check, cash or money order;

- Marriage License;

- Government-issued Photo ID for the Applicants; and

- A valid phone number and/or email for the Applicants.

How Do I Change My Last Name?

In Pennsylvania, your last name doesn't automatically change when you get married. Click on the links below about how to change your last name on your Social Security Card and at PennDOT. Once you have those documents, changing your name on other documents is much easier.

Photo Identification

The Applicants must bring government-issued photo identification to schedule the wedding.

Examples include: Driver's License, Passport, Identification card.

Photos/Videos of Ceremony

Photos and videos may be taken during the ceremony. Phones and cameras may be brought in the courthouse for this purpose.

Information about having a wedding ceremony at a courthouse.

Please remember this is a working courthouse, not a wedding chapel. Not all individuals in the courthouse are happy to be here. You may observe individuals in handcuffs and/or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

All wedding ceremonies are scheduled on Wednesdays between 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm. The court does its best to stay on schedule. If the Applicants are not present and prepared to proceed within 5 minutes of their scheduled wedding ceremony, the ceremony will be rescheduled. The ceremony will only be rescheduled once. If the ceremony cannot occur within the required timeframe listed on your valid marriage license, the filing fee will be refunded.

When scheduling your ceremony, please notify this court if an interpreter is requested. This court will provide an interpret via the telephone, upon request.
